Another appreciated feature was the custom firmware, which allowed people to download soft copies of games from the internet in order to play them instead of having to buy UMDs of games that might not be available in their region. People who owned an Asian region PSP could enjoy UMDs bought in U.S., which was a great feature even if it did not apply to UMD movies. Starting with the difference it made for its home company, the PSP was the first Sony console to not have region locking when it came to games. The PlayStation Portable (PSP for short) may have failed to beat out its competitor, the Nintendo DS, but it still managed to leave a mark as an innovator of the portable gaming industry.
